D-I-Y Broadband for Home or Office

Using NetComm's simple-to-install broadband solutions, you can take home everything you need to have your whole household or small office online in a couple of clicks.

First, make sure your premises are ADSL-ready. If in doubt, check with your ISP, or with Telstra. For this part of the installation, there's nothing that needs doing: all the action takes place at the telephone exchange. When your ADSL service is approved, you will be notified. Then you're ready to go.

Connections for One

An ADSL MODEM is a gateway that provides a permanent connection to the Internet. Once your ADSL service is connected at the exchange, it is always available and does not require you to 'dial in' to browse the Web or retrieve email.

A single computer can be connected to ADSL through a NetComm NB2 (pictured). Connected via the USB port, the NB2 provides always-ready, high-speed broadband connection for any PC.

Connections for More

If you have more than one computer, or if you can plan to get more; and you want each of them to be able to access the internet, as well as sharing information with each other, then you will need a ROUTER.

A router is a sophisticated kind of network device. Its jobs include directing Web pages to the computer that requested them, and generally sorting out which bit of information goes to which computer. It provides the central connection for all your computers, and also the point of connection between your computers and the Internet.

So if you want to share an Internet connection with two or more computers, then a NetComm NB1300Plus4 will give you the connections you need. Why? Because it is a Modem - which connects your ADSL service - and a Router - which directs your Internet traffic - and a switch - which handles file-sharing between computers. All in one!

What is a Line Filter?

ADSL uses your phone line to deliver information to your premises. If you connect your telephone to an unfiltered ADSL service, it won't work, or you will hear the data whizzing through the line as very high pitched beeps and whistles. This is why you need to attach a filter between the wall socket and the body of each telephone, or fax: it filters the ADSL data stream from the voice signals. A splitter does the same thing, but at the point at which the line enters the house; if you have a number of handsets and faxes on your premises, consider having a line splitter installed.

Network Gaming

It is a simple matter to connect your PS2 or Xbox gaming console. All you need is the network gaming kit from your console vendor, and a network cable. Then follow the instructions on the screen. And don't forget to check your ISPs help resources - many ISPs provide special rates for downloading game data.
